For Immediate Release

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Prof Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf has announced that the university will continue with its plan to build a new residence facility of 2000 beds for its students. This announcement follows the approval of the consent use application made by the university.

“With our consent use (‘rezoning’) application now approved, we also hope to soon break ground on our new 2000 bed student residence facility. We will also focus on improving our efficiency and effectiveness of our operations, preventing fraud and corruption as well as diversifying our sources of funding”, said Prof Ayo-Yusuf.

Prof Ayo-Yusuf further committed that the university will continue with its maintenance and upgrade of facilities and accelerate the pace of enhancing the quality of its academic programmes in an effort to support the university’s teaching, research, community engagement and service missions.

SMU has received a record student application of over 30 000 and only has just over 1000 spaces for new entrants and this is a clear indication that more and more students have interest to study at this fledging University.

The university is expected to record more key milestones this year including the installation of its Chancellor Designate Dr Zweli Mkhize who is the Minister of Health.
