Call for Nominations: Two Members of the Council to be appointed to the Council on the basis of their (i) Vacancy 1: Financial Management and Accounting and (ii) Vacancy 2: Audit and Risk Management Expertise and Experience
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) plays an important role in addressing the human capital development needs of South Africa and the rest of the African continent in both health care and science & technology fields. The Council of the SMU is the governing body of the University, and has, as part of its fiduciary duty, a responsibility to determine the strategic direction of the University. Two (2) vacancies in the category of Council members who are appointed to the Council on the basis of their expertise and experience have arisen, necessitating the call for nominations.
Accordingly, and in terms of paragraph 20(6) of the SMU Statute (2016), organizations, interest groups and individuals are hereby invited to nominate candidates (preferably females) who are (i): qualified Chartered Accountants with experience in financial management and accounting; and (ii): qualified Chartered Accountants with experience in audit and risk management. Both candidates must have a minimum of five years’ experience at a Board level and must have a total of 20 years’ working experience in their respective fields. The nominated candidates must have demonstrable/proven experience in the following areas:
- Financial and Accounting and understanding of potential financial implications of specific decisions
- Assessment of the organization’s financial health and financial control environment
- Relevant financial regulations and conversant with professional accounting standards
- Identification, quantification and strategies for managing risks
- Strong communication skills and ability to build consensus; and
- Other board interaction experience or Board/Council committee work.
Each nomination should be accompanied by a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae of the nominee and must be signed by the nominator, clearly indicating if it is for a Vacancy 1 or Vacancy 2. In addition, the nominee must indicate his/her acceptance of the nomination in writing. Nomination forms are available from the Office of the Registrar and the SMU website. Nominations must reach the Registrar of the University no later than 16:00 on Friday, 12 June 2020.
A Council member thus appointed will serve on the Council in his or her personal capacity and not as a representative of any interest group.
