Academic Programmes

The Anaesthetic Department offers:
Undergraduate programme
1. Undergraduate programme:

The department in addition to postgraduate candidates provides undergraduate teaching in Anaesthesia. Undergraduate teaching involves lectures and in-theatre training. Postgraduate trainees are expected to assist with undergraduate teaching.

Postgraduate programmes
2. Postgraduate programmes:

  1. A comprehensive four-year postgraduate training programme for registered medical practitioners wishing to obtain specialist registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in the field of Anaesthesiology (the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa {FCA (SA)}.
  2. A Masters in Medicine (M Med) degree from Sefako Makgato Health Science University (SMU).
  3. Academic programme to prepare candidates who wish to obtain a Diploma in Anaesthesia {DA (SA)} from the College of Medicine of South Africa.
MMed Programme
The MMed Programme:

All post graduate trainees (Registrars) are registered with Sefako Makgato Health Science University for the MMed course on commencement of postgraduate training. The training programme is essentially divided into two training modules:

  1. Anaesthetics Part One module
  2. A compulsory research component is included in the second module.

Anaesthetics Part One module:

The main purposes of the Anaesthetics Part One module is to ensure that Registrars have the necessary knowledge and understanding of the basic sciences that underlie the study and practice of anaesthesia, to provide them with supervised clinical experience, and to strengthen their grasp of professional ethics and standards of appropriate behaviour.

The Part One tutorial programme takes place on Wednesday afternoon in each of the three main divisions of the examination: Physics and statistics, Physiology and Pharmacology.

Anaesthetics Part Two module:

The main purposes of the Anaesthetics Part Two module is to prepare candidates to undertake a successful research project leading to the completion of the degree Master of Medicine in Anaesthetics, and preparation for the final fellowship examination required for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a specialist anaesthetist.

The programme consists of a series of lectures, tutorials and seminars in addition to on-going in-service training.

Departmental Academic Meetings:

There are a number of educational meetings held by the Department. Attendance at these CPD-accredited meetings is compulsory for all members of the department.

Tuesday and Friday Morning Meetings at 07h00 – 07h45 in Theatre Seminar Room, Main Theatre Building, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital :

  1. Part I programme – presentations relevant to FCA curriculum

Monthly M&M meeting every last Friday morning of the month at 07:00

Wednesday Academic Afternoons at 13:00-16:00:

  1. Part I programme at Basic Sciences Department of Sefako Makgatho Health Science University.
  2. Part II programme – presentations relevant to FCA curriculum domains in the Theatre Seminar Room, Main Theatre Building, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.
