The simulator was donated as part of an exchange project in Trauma and Emergency Medicine between SMU/DGMAH and Haukeland University Hospital (Norway) and will be used to enhance the skills of Registrars in laparoscopic surgery. “There is a high incidence of penetrating trauma patients at DGMAH/SMU. Stable patients are operated with laparoscopic access, either for laparoscopic exploration, laparoscopy assisted surgery, or definitive surgery”, said Carina Marais, Project Coordinator of NOREC.
She further said, “The Registrars operating on penetrating trauma patients at DGMAH do not have access to such high level of training instruments. The level of treatment of trauma patients will be greatly enhanced, if registrars use the same training instruments as those of Haukeland University hospital for skill training. This will contribute greatly to capacity building and knowledge of the Registrars working at DGMAH to improve patient outcomes”.
Prof Lekan Ayo-Yusuf, SMU Acting Vice-Chancellor, Ms. Lene Eriksen, Norwegian nurse, Ms. Hanne Fosse, Norwegian nurse, and Prof John Ndimande, Acting CEO of DGMAH were in attendance during the handover ceremony.

In early January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO), China Country office flagged the discovery of a virus, known as the Novel Coronavirus. It has been identified to be zoonotic, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. The virus is very contagious and spreads from one infected person to another, through coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, etc. The infected person presents cold like symptoms and respiratory tract illnesses. The virus has since spread at a high pace outside China, with reported cases in the following countries: Japan, Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Republic of Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, United States of America, France, and one suspected case in Africa, reported in the Ivory Coast.

It is with regret to announce the departure of Prof L Green-Thompson as the Dean of the School of Medicine. He would be taking up responsibility as the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. He is a nationally and internationally recognised leader in Health Sciences Education. He would surely be missed. I wish to take this opportunity to thank him for his contributions to the School and to the University at large.
He would continue to lead the school until his final departure on the 15th March 2020. We would begin the search for a new Dean for the School in earnest. We would also in the near future be announcing interim arrangements for the leadership of the school.
Join me in thanking Prof Lionel Green-Thompson for his contributions and in wishing him well in his future endeavours.

First, I would like to again express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of late Dr Shongile Nkwashu who recently completed her MBChB programme in December 2019 before she met her untimely death, having worked as an Intern for just about two weeks with the Limpopo Department of Health. It is also pained us deeply to learn about the death of Ms Joyce Mokono who as the Cordinator for research support, grants and strategic partnership until her untimely death. May their respective souls rest in eternal peace.
It is important to brief the University community about developments on the campus, including the developments regarding some of the infrastructural challenges submitted to the Council last year at a joint seating of students and staff and, developments related to the restoration of student Cafeteria and alternative arrangements.
Before going into details on the progress related to maintenance activities and new plans, it is important to provide some context as we start the academic year. Following the disruptions in University operations from the prolonged strike action that lasted until about the 26th August 2019, the then Vice Chancellor left the University shortly thereafter. I was appointed the Acting Vice Chancellor by the Chairperson of Council effective 2 September 2019 for a period of three months, with the proviso that appointment of an acting Vice-Chancellor for longer period would be after the Chairperson’s consultation with the Senate, Institutional Forum and the Council as prescribed by the University’s Statute. Following these consultations, the Acting Chairperson of Council at that stage decided to extend my appointment for a further six (6) months. I wish to therefore thank the University community and the Council for the trust bestowed in me to continue to steer the affairs of the University through this transitional period.

As you might be aware, we had to make an emergency arrangement for food services on campus shortly after closure of the student cafeteria in September 2019. Following a recent review of the food services offered at the Marque under the emergency arrangement, it was decided that the arrangement was inadequate and financially not sustainable. We therefore did not renew the contract of the service provider.
In light of the above, the University Community is hereby informed that Bidvest has been appointed for the provision of food services on campus. The current arrangement is that food will be prepared from the mobile kitchen that is currently on site, and then will be served from the kiosk in the Student Cafeteria. The dining area in the cafeteria has been deep cleaned by the service provider and will be used as an eating area.
From the 9th of January 2020, hot meals will be provided from the mobile kitchen and served in the dining area. In addition, there will be grab and go items (wraps, sandwiches & salads). Resale items will also be available (cold drinks, crisps, bread, sweets, etc.). Take-aways will also be available (chips, toasted sandwiches, pies, etc.). The full mobile solution is due to commence in the week of 20th January 2020 wherein a ‘front of house’ servery will be delivered and a temporary dining room, that will be air-conditioned, and will be placed next to the mobile kitchen for students and staff to be able to collect and eat their meals.
This arrangement will remain while we are renovating the student and staff cafeteria, which is scheduled to be completed about June 2020 since we are now redesigning the two facilities. A food hygienist certified in food safety compliance would continue to monitor the services and renovations planned.
We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused and we thank you for your understanding.
Regards,
