HONOURS DEGREE Programmes

BSc (MS) (HONS) DEGREE PROGRAMME

Selection
(i) For practical reasons only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme. Students are therefore selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
(ii) Students who have been refused re-registration in a Faculty of Medicine at any other University shall not be admitted to this Medical School.

Admission requirements
(i) Students who hold the BSc (Med) degree from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University or equivalent qualification from another South African university can register for the degree if selected (if the requirement of (c) below is met).
(ii) Students who hold similar qualifications may enquire from the heads of the various departments concerned what the requirements would be for them to obtain BSc (Med) Status at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. No person is, however, automatically entitled to BSc (Med) status regardless of the type and number of qualifications they hold.

Duration of the Course
The duration of the programme shall be a minimum of one academic year full-time or two successive academic years part-time, unless otherwise indicated by the respective department.

BSc (HONS) (MS) ANATOMICAL PATHOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSA01)

Selection

REGISTRATION WITH THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL OF SOUTH AFRICA
Students who do the BSc (Med) (Hons) in any discipline should request registration as a Medical Scientist in training at the Professional Board at the Health Professions Council of South Africa. After obtaining the degree all successful students may register as Medical Scientists in the category Biological Sciences after having obtained the required practical experience in a laboratory accredited for that purpose.

BSc (HONS) (MS) MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY/CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY (HMSD01)

Selection
i. For practical reasons only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme. Students are therefore selected on merit by a selection committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar
ii. Students who have been refused re-registration in a Faculty of Medicine at any other university shall not be admitted to this medical school.

Admission Requirements
Students who hold the BSc (Med) degree from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University or equivalent qualification from another South African university can register for the degree if selected.
(i) Normally no student who obtained less than 60% aggregate at the pre-graduate level will be allowed to do the Honours degree programme without having written a special Admission examination. The head of the department will determine the nature of such an Admission examination.
(ii) To be considered for honours in Chemical Pathology, student who hold BSc (Med) degree from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University must have physiology and biochemistry as their major subjects or equivalent modules from another South African university
(iii) Only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme annually, therefore students will be selected on merit.

BSc HONS (MS) HAEMATOLOGICAL PATHOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSF01)

Admission Requirements
(i) A candidate who holds a BSc (Med) degree or has BSc (Med) status granted by Senate and with appropriate subjects may apply to register for the degree. A candidate with a non-medical BSc status must attend and pass a course in Medical Haematological Pathology course during the BSc (Med) (Hons) training as well as any other requirements at the discretion of the Head of the Department.
(ii) Normally no student who obtained less than 60% aggregate at the pre-graduate level will be allowed to do the Honours degree programme without having written a special Admission examination. The head of the department will determine the nature of such an Admission examination.
(iii) Normally no student who obtained less than 60% aggregate for physiology at the pre-graduate level will be allowed to do the Honours degree programme without having written a special Admission examination. The head of the department will determine the nature of such an Admission examination.
(iv) Only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme annually, therefore students will be selected on merit.

Two academic years (part-time)

BSC HONS (MS) (MEDICAL PHYSICS) DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSC01)

Selection

(i) Applicants must be in possession of a B.Sc. degree majoring in Physics or a B.Sc. (Med) in Radiation Sciences or any qualification deemed equivalent by the University.
(ii) Applicants must obtain at least 60% as an aggregate final mark for Physics major module and an ancillary module.

BSc HONS (MS) MICROBIOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSG01)

Admission Requirements
(i) Eligibility for admission as a candidate to this degree requires a BSc (Med) degree, or BSc (Med) status granted by Senate with a major in Microbiology. Students without a major in microbiology may be considered at the discretion of the head of the department, and the availability of space.
(ii) A candidate with a non-medical BSc degree with majors in Microbiology is eligible for admission, but also has to obtain BSc (Med) status by attending and passing a course in Medical Microbiology during the duration of the BSc (Med) (Hons) training.
(iii) Moreover, students will be required to attend the normal microbiology lecture programme together with the relevant medical student group concurrently with their honours study.
(iv) Admission to the honour’s programme shall at all times be subject to the approval of the head of the relevant department and acceptance of the prescribed curriculum by the student.
(v) Only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme annually, therefore students will be selected on merit.

1 academic year (full-time) and 2 academic years (part-time).

BSc (MS) (HONS) PHARMACOLOGY (HMSI01)

Selection
(i) For practical reasons only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme. Students are therefore selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
(ii) Students who have been refused re-registration in a Faculty of Medicine at any other University shall not be admitted to this Medical Faculty.

The duration of the programme shall be a minimum of one academic year full-time or unless otherwise indicated by the respective department.

BSc (HONS) (MS) PHYSIOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSK01)

Selection and Admission
For practical reasons only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme. Students are therefore selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
(i) Applicants must be in possession of a BSc degree with Physiology (or equivalent) as a major course and Biochemistry as an ancillary subject.
(ii) Normally, no student who obtained less than 60% for Physiology at graduate level will be allowed to do the honours degree programme without having written a special admission examination. The head of the department will determine the nature of such an admission examination.

Duration of the Course
One (1) academic year. Only full-time students can be accommodated.

BSc HONS (MS) PSYCHOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HSCS01)

Selection and Admission
(i) In order to apply for the BSc Hons (Psychology) degree, students should have a first degree with Psychology as a major or core component.
(ii) Applicants must obtain at least 65% as an aggregate final mark for their 3rd year Psychology major modules.
(iii) Only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme annually, therefore students will be selected on merit.

Duration of the Course
One (1) academic full year.

BSC HONS MEDICAL SCIENCES IN ANATOMY (HMS01)

Selection and Admission
(i) Candidature: A candidate for the degree must have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor from SMU or from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the selection committee, the Minimum requirement for admission being 60%.
(ii) Enrolment: An approved candidate shall be enrolled in one of the following categories: full-time attendance at the University; part-time attendance at the University; external – not in regular attendance at the University and using research facilities external to SMU.

Duration of the Course
One academic year for full time and two academic years for part time.

BSc (MED) (HONS) IN MEDICAL VIROLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME (HMSH01)

Selection and Admission
Eligibility for Admission as a candidate to the degree is a BSc (Med) degree, or candidates who are granted BSc (Med) status by Senate. A candidate with a non-medical BSc degree with majors in Microbiology or Virology is eligible for Admission, but also has to obtain BSc (Med) status by attending and passing a course in Medical Microbiology during the duration of the BSc (Med) (Hons) training.

Duration of the Course
One (1) full-time academic year.
Note: Part-time courses over 2 academic years may be offered in special circumstances.
