About the Office
The Office of the Registrar is responsible for general institutional supervision with a view to, inter alia, ensure compliance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act, 101 of 1997, as amended from time to time.
As a member of the University Executive Management Committee (MANCO), the Registrar, Dr JM Mabelebele, is responsible for the line management of the following portfolios, amongst others: Academic Administration; Legal Services, Records Management, and Registry Services. The Office of the Registrar also provides secretariat services related to the meetings of the MANCO, Senate, Institutional Forum, Council and their respective Committees. The Registrar is also a compliance officer of the University.

Academic Administration
Academic Administration includes the management and governance of the academic lifecycle of the student, from application to graduation.
The division consists of Enrolment Management, Assessment, Certification & Records, including examination timetabling, other general academic administration matters as well as Registry Services.

Legal Services
The Legal Services Unit provides legal services to the University’s management, academic and support service departments. The activities include the following:
- Negotiating, drafting and scrutinizing contracts and other legal documents, as well as effectively managing such documents.
- Providing legal advice over a broad range of matters and managing all litigation for or against the University.
- Establishing, maintaining and promoting the statutory regulations and decisions that direct the functioning of the University.
- Providing legal and administrative support in respect of disciplinary matters involving students and staff.

Committee Administration & Secretariat Services
The Secretariat supports the Registrar in rendering a professional secretarial function to MANCO, Senate, Institutional Forum, Council, and their respective Committees in order to facilitate the decision-making process and to manage the implementation of the decisions of these bodies.

Records Management
The Registrar is responsible for the management of the University’s official records in a manner compliant with legislation, in such a way as to best serve its operational and business requirements, preserve institutional memory, and manage risk effectively. The Unit takes full responsibility for regulating securing the storage and handling of records, adherence to retention schedules, and appropriate disposal by those authorised to do so.
