About Us:

The Institutional Planning Department (IPD) at SMU falls under the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement. The main function of the IPD is to carry out those activities to provide for long-term sustainability, planning capacity, institutional research and quality improvement of the university as an operating organisation. The department provides for the institution’s organisational efficiency, quality and planning.
The department does this by providing for:

  • Strategic & Academic Planning.
  • Quality Assurance and Enhancement;
  • Management Information Services;
  • Institutional Research;
  • Space Planning and Timetabling

Strategic & Academic Planning

The strategic & academic planning function includes activities related to directing, managing and integrating the strategic and academic planning processes of the institution at organisational, School and divisional level.

Quality Assurance & Enhancement

The quality assurance & enhancement function includes activities related to developing, managing, implementing and maintaining an institutional quality management system that addresses all requirements for the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) institutional audits, as well as the requirements for programme accreditation as stipulated by the HEQC and professional bodies.

Management Information Services

The management information services function includes activities related to the provision of management information in order to guide institutional planning, quality assurance and decision-making processes that are responsive to the demands of external regulatory environment for higher education in South Africa as determined by the Ministry of Education, the Higher Education Quality Committee, and other role-players.

Institutional Research

The institutional research function includes activities related to conducting research projects with the aim of improving the effectiveness, efficiency, responsiveness and overall performance of the institution and supporting the institution strategically.

Space Management & Timetabling
