SMU Graduations
Please take note of the following:
a) It is important to ensure that your name(s) have been captured accurately because that is how they will be reflected on your certificate. b) The graduation ceremony is a formal academic occasion and certain protocols must be observed. Please note that:
• Undergraduates, Honours and Masters graduands are allowed two (2) guests;
• Doctoral graduands are allowed four (4) guests;
• Children under the age of seven (7) will not be allowed into the hall;
• There will be live streaming of the ceremonies and a link will be made available a week before the ceremony; and
• The wearing of masks is compulsory in the hall during the ceremony.
c) Graduands and their guests need to be seated by 9:30 before the start of the ceremony and the entry of the academic procession. The ceremony is expected to last for approximately two hours.
d) Graduands are expected to wear the correct academic dress (gown, hood and mortar board) for the qualifications that they will receive. The academic dress can be obtained from your own suppliers. Alternatively, you can contact Dippenaar & Reinecke on 012 343 2945/6/7 and they will be able to provide appropriate regalia in the correct colours for your qualification.
e) Those who graduate in absentia and do not have outstanding fees, can collect their degree/diploma certificate from the Assessment and Certification Unit, Room N007, Clinical Pathology Building from the 31st of May 2022.
f) Graduands who owe fees are encouraged to settle outstanding fees long before the date of graduation. Please note that certificates will only be released at the graduation venue if proof of payment/return of books has not been verified at least 24 hours before the ceremony. Unfortunately verification cannot be done at the ceremony. Staff members in the Student Debtor’s Office can be contacted on 012 521 4500/4317/4735.
g) Seating cards and guests’ tickets can be collected at the University Sports Complex from 8:00 on the day of the ceremony. Please come early to avoid delays.
h) The University has appointed an official photographer and no private photographers will be allowed inside the hall. Visit smu.ac.za for the price list and order form.
i) Parking will be provided at the University Sports Complex.
