2024 Graduation Announcement

If by now you have not received a letter informing you about graduation ceremonies,  please refer to the link below:

Notice - SMU Graduation Ceremonies 22 - 24 May 2024

Please take note of the following:

  1. Those who are graduating will be able to check their graduation status on the University website from Tuesday, 10 April 2024. They will also be sent personalised letters.
  2. Graduation ceremony is a formal academic occasion and diplomandi/graduands are expected to observe the following protocols:
    • Undergraduates, honours and Masters diplomandi/graduands are allowed two (2) guests
    • Doctoral graduands are allowed four (4) guests.
    • Children under the age of seven (7) will not be allowed into the hall.
  3. There will be live streaming of the ceremony and proceedings can be followed by using the link which will be posted on the University website closer to the time of the ceremony.
  4. Everybody needs to be seated by 9:30 before the start of the ceremony and the entry of the academic procession. Secondly, after the ceremony proceedings commence, you may not vacate from the venue until the academic procession has left the hall. The ceremony is expected to last for approximately two hours.
  5. Those who are graduating are expected to wear the correct academic dress (gown, hood and mortar board) for the qualifications that they will receive. The academic dress can be obtained from their own suppliers. Alternatively, they can contact Dippenaar & Reinecke on 012 343 2945/6/7 and they will be able to provide appropriate regalia in the correct colours for their qualification.
  6. Those who graduate in absentia and do not have outstanding fees, may collect their degree/diploma certificates from the Assessment and Certification Unit, Room N007, Clinical Pathology Building from the 31st of May 2024.
  7. Those who have outstanding fees are encouraged to settle their debt long before the date of graduation because certificates will not be released to graduates/diplomates who owe fees or those who have not returned library books. If you are not certain about your situation, contact Student Debtor’s Office on 012 521 4500/4317/4735 about fees and the library about books.
  8. Seating cards and guests’ tickets can be collected at the University Sports Complex from 8:00 on the day of the ceremony. Please come early to avoid delays.
  9. The University has appointed an official photographer and no private photographers will be allowed inside the hall. Visit smu.ac.za (under graduations) for the price list and order form.
  10. Parking will be provided at the University Sports Complex.
