After further constructive engagement between Council of the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris de Beer, it was agreed by both parties to part ways, in the best interest of all parties concerned. It was further agreed that Prof de Beer will be taking early leave from the University with immediate effect.
The Council would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank Prof de Beer for his contribution to the University during his tenure and we wish him everything of the best in his future plans.
The search for a new Vice-Chancellor is underway and the Council is looking forward to appointing a new Vice-Chancellor in the near future. In the interim, Prof Lekan Ayo-Yusuf will act as Vice-Chancellor of SMU until further notice.

It is with sadness to announce the passing of Student Hunadi Magongoa (MBChB II) overnight on the 1st September 2019, reportedly due to food consumed from our Student Cafeteria on Friday 30th August 2019. Hi, I am Professor L Ayo-Yusuf, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. The past few weeks have not been easy for us as the SMU community and other stakeholders including our partners due to prolonged strike action.
As a university, we want to assure all our students, staff, parents and stakeholders that we are working very hard towards building a better SMU community.
We have resumed with all academic activities and operations of the university and will certainly make sure that majority of our students finish the academic programme for 2019.
The Deans of schools are working hard, jointly with the students and academic staff to ensure the implementation of recovery plans to reclaim lost time.
We invite you to be part of this journey to recovery as we continue to produce good quality health professionals and scientists as part of addressing the challenges facing the country.
A Popular African proverb says “you cannot clap with one hand, you need both hands to clap for victory”.
Let’s work together towards building a better SMU community.
I thank you.

The last three weeks have been difficult for the University as no semblance of academic activities of the University could be undertaken, with major consequences for the students, staff, the University and the country at large. Operations of the University were resumed, although with intermittent disruptions, over the last few days. It is within this context the Council of the University met three times during the three-week period of protest action, with the sole objective of addressing the demands presented to it, and thereby creating conditions for the operational and academic activities of the University to resume without delay.
