After consultation with the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Transitional Student Representative Council (SMU TSRC) executive, it was agreed that the election date for 2017/2018 SRC elections be on the 27 September 2017.
The elections will be independently managed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Further details regarding the elections will be communicated to by the Director Student Affairs and/or as necessary.

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) academics have been elected to serve on the senate of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) for the next triennium (2017 – 2020).
The CMSA senate has 62 members and SMU is represented by six academics from their various colleges (approx. 10% of the senate). Those elected are:
- Prof E Osuch (College of Clinical Pharmacologists)
- Prof M H Motswaledi (College of Dermatologists) & College President (Dermatologists)
- Prof G A Ogunbanjo (College of Family Physicians) & Honorary Registrar of the CMSA
- Prof D S Magazi (College of Neurologists)
- Prof M Z Koto (College of Surgeons) & College President (Surgeons)
- Prof S B A Mutambirwa (College of Urologists)

The Department of Anaesthesiology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and Dr. George Mukhari Academic Hospital hosted their annual Basic Airway Management Course on 25 August 2017. The aim of the course is to improve the knowledge and skills of airway management of doctors and nurses outside the Department of Anaesthesiology. Sasol TechnoX, an exhibition focuses on displays, workshops, tours, talks and hands-on activities aimed at impassioning learners, students and the public about the endless career possibilities of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Furthermore, the exhibition strives to expose the many facets of technology by encouraging learners to explore a wide range of disciplines and careers that STEM offers.
This year’s Sasol Techno X took place from 31 July to 04 August 2017, in Secunda, Mpumalanga. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) had an opportunity to take part and exhibit a wide range of programmes offered by the institution.
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University came 3rd in the Universities category. SMU takes delight in knowing that, as an Institution of higher education we are contributing in changing the lives of young learners in our communities.
