South African Medical Research Council
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) aims to deliver on a mandate to promote the improvement of the health and the quality of life of the population of our country through research, development and technology transfer. The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has had a close professional relationship with the MRC through various research capacity development initiatives and various call funds. The scope of the SAMRC’s research includes basic laboratory investigations, clinical research and public health studies. Research at the SAMRC focuses on the ten highest causes of mortality in South Africa and includes TB, HIV, chronic diseases, alcohol and drug abuse, and women’s health.

Department of Higher Education and Training Research Development Grant (RDG)
The main purpose of the RDG is to encourage universities to enhance their research capacity and improve their research productivity through a focus on developing the research capabilities of academic staff through qualification improvement. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has applications open from the following projects:
1. Postgraduate study support programmes for developmental staff (study programmes that specifically support academic staff to obtain formal postgraduate degrees, mainly at Masters and Doctoral levels).
2. Postdoctoral research fellowship programmes (aimed at providing opportunities for recent doctoral degree recipients to enhance their research skills, with a long-term objective of increasing new generation of researchers/ academics).
