Our Mission

The Microsurgery Skills Laboratory aims to provide high-quality training and research opportunities in the field of microsurgery.

Our History

The Department of Hand and Microsurgery was established at the end of 1985 as a separate department from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The aim was to develop this specialized field of hand surgery and to provide proper undergraduate and postgraduate training in the art and science of hand surgery. Under the stewardship of Professor Ulrich Mennen in 1987, the department established the Basic Microsurgery Laboratory, which has trained more than 3,000 surgeons in South Africa and across Africa.

In our 37 years of existence, the laboratory has grown thanks to our trainer, Ms. Annemarie Wiese, who has equipped us with her 37 years of experience teaching Basic and Applied Microsurgery within the institution.
