For Immediate Release
Members of the media are hereby invited to SMU-MEDUNSA Alumni Association (SMAA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) and a Class of 1988 Reunion. This premier event of the SMU will be held on Saturday 17 November 2018, at the Protea Hotel, Fire and Ice, Menlyn, from 17h00 to 23h00.
Young and old graduates who have studied, firstly, at MEDUNSA, then at MEDUNSA Campus of the University of Limpopo (UL) with which it was merged and lately as a stand-alone comprehensive health sciences university, will attend this event. This ceremony will enable the alumni to reconnect with old class mates and reminisce about their days at the university. But they will also be apprised on developments at their alma mater by Prof Chris de Beer, the SMU’s Vice-Chancellor.
The highlight of the ceremony will be a keynote address by Prof E T Mokgokong, the first Black Vice-Chancellor of the former Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) and a stalwart gynaecologist who trained many medical doctors in the country. Prof Mokgokong is expected to share his wisdom and experience, acquired over decades as an academic and as a health professional, with the captive audience of alumni.
Alumni structures are statutory bodies that have been established in terms of the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Statute of 2016. Among other roles, alumni structures assist the university to establish networks of support to mobilise third stream sources of funding for the university, in the wake of declining budgetary allocation from government.

The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is saddened by the news of the passing away of the Honourable Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr. Edna Molewa, during the morning of 22 September 2018. We concur with the President of South Africa that her passing is a devastating loss to our nation and to the global community. The SMU honours her for her contributions and pioneering leadership in numerous spheres. The SMU community experiences the loss of the passing away of Dr. Molewa in a special way.
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend and cover Dr. Molewa’s memorial service on TUESDAY 2 OCTOBER 2018, at SMU Sports Complex (Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria), from 13h00.
The SMU was established on 16 May 2014 as one of three new post-apartheid universities in South Africa with a particular focus on health sciences education. The Honourable Dr. Molewa was inaugurated on 17 March 2017 as the first Chancellor of the SMU, and served in this capacity until her untimely passing.
Dr. Molewa fully and unconditionally embraced the vision and mission of the institution and contributed immensely during her short term of Office to the stabilization and development of the SMU. Despite the multiple responsibilities associated with her role in government and beyond, her calling to serve the SMU as Chancellor always found a special place. The SMU owes a great debt of appreciation to our Chancellor for representing the institution with passion and distinction, and for introducing the SMU as a fledgling institution to important national and international networks.
With the Nation, the SMU mourns the passing of Dr Molewa, and herewith conveys its deepest condolences to her family and friends. The University will in due course, after consultation with stakeholders and with due observance of the wishes of the Molewa family and national commemorative events, provide detail of University initiated memorial arrangements.
May the soul of our beloved Chancellor rest in eternal peace.

SMU becoming the Nelson Mandela Legacy
Nelson Mandela, the founding father of the democratic South Africa, would have turned 100 years old, on Wednesday 2018, had he been alive, today. To celebrate his centenary, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to preserve his legacy, issued a clarion call to all humanity to embrace the virtues of becoming Mandela’s legacy.
The SMU Community, as always, is rising to the challenge to become the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The community identified two poor family members of the Ga-Rankuwa community to benefit from the 67 minutes community service that they will be rendering.
The beneficiaries are the old pensioners who live alone and their houses need refurbishment to make them habitable and their yards would do well with cleaning as they have overgrown with grass and weeds.
Working in groups, the volunteers, who are students and staff will use the 20 litre paint and brushes that have been donated, to paint the one room which needs painting. They will also bring their own spades and other gardening implements to clean the yard. The cleaning department has donated refuse bags to carry the refuse, trucks will carry the refuse to dumping site. The food donations will also be handed to the needy families. The other work group will remain on the campus of SMU to clean up the campus.
