Dr Owen Gavi – the Gold Medal Winner

Dr Owen Gavi, a Registrar in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department (OGD) obtained a Gold Medal for outstanding results in the Fellow of the College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FCOG) Exams. This makes it the first award in O&G, at SMU.

 

The exams are a culmination of a four year intense programme in which Gavi obtained over 75 percent mark, beating 39 candidates, from seven medical schools. “I am glad to receive the award in the exit specialist exams and that shows dedication and hard work. Because I beat all candidates from other medical schools, it gives great credit to SMU and helps to put SMU on the map of success. It is an inspiration to those who are seeking to enrol at SMU to specialise” enthused Dr Gavi.

 

Gavi’s next move is to rest, catch a breather after hard work in preparations for the FCOG Exams and thereafter look for work to ply his trade. Qualified with an MBChB degree from Zimbabwe, he then went on to serve his internship at the Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo and later joined SMU as a registrar.

From 2015, Sefako Makgatho Health Scienes University (SMU) students have been flying to University of Oxford Medical School in the United Kingdom to have first-hand experience in European Medicine. Miss Pipeloluwa Mercy Adegbenro (21), a fifth year student in Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor Surgery (MBChB) at SMU is one of the 50 Elective students from around the world who will be embarking on such a journey.

 

The programme will run for the entire month of December 2018 at the Department of Neurosurgery, John Radcliffe Hospital. She will be attending ward rounds and observing Neurosurgical procedures in the theatre.

 

“My father, Mr. Adegbenro always says preparation plus opportunity brings success. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University has efficiently equipped me and I am grateful to God for this tremendous opportunity to represent the school on a global platform”, said Ms. Adegbenro.

Status of the 2019 First Entering Applications

Status of the 2019 First Entering Applications

The University’s has only received the final DBE NSC results for all the prospective students who have applied to study at SMU in 2019 on Saturday, 5 January 2019.

During the course of the week commencing on Monday, 7 January 2019 to Friday 11 January 2019, the Selection Committees of the various School will sit to evaluate all the applications received, and will communicate the outcomes of their decisions to students via sms from Tuesday, 8 January 2019 until 11 January 2019. With the exception of the BPHARM programme first entering admitted students who will register on Thursday, 17 January 2019, ALL OTHER admitted first entering students for other programmes are scheduled to register at the University from Monday, 21 January 2019 to 25 January 2019.

Given the volume of applications received and being processed, no late applications will be received during the week of 7-11 January 2019.
