Department of Virology
About Us
The Department of Virology provides pathology services as a Dr George Mukhari (DGM) tertiary laboratory in Northern Gauteng region, a department within NHLS, as well as an academic department at Sefako Makgatho Health Science University (SMU). These include peripheral laboratories in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. The department is comprised of joint appointees responsible for the laboratory services, as well as academic functions of the university, full-time university staff members, and full-time NHLS staff members. The department hosts three research units (Diarrhoeal Pathogens Research Unit, HIV and Hepatitis Research Unit, and HPV and STI training center). The department has national, regional and international linkages and collaborations.
