Virology Diagnostic Service

DGM Virology laboratory offers routine diagnostic testing for various viruses using immunological-based methods and molecular methods. The laboratory has maintained its SANAS accreditation status for a number of years and provides service to public hospitals as well as clinics in the north of Pretoria. It continues to serve as a referral site for a number of NHLS laboratories in Mpumalanga, North West and Limpopo provinces.

The laboratory is one of the referral laboratories for HIV viral load testing in the National Priority Programme. Additionally, the Virology laboratory at Dr George Mukhari Academic hospital (DGM) is one of five laboratories that are offering HIV drug resistance routine testing for South African public sector within the NHLS. As such, the HIV drug resistance laboratory has been operational since February 2018. Furthermore, the virology laboratory has participated in the National Antenatal HIV Surveillance Programme for over 20 years now. It is also a teaching platform for intern medical technologists and technicians, intern medical scientists and pathology registrars.
