Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery

MAXILLOFACIAL AND ORAL SURGERY

Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery is the specialty which combines surgical training with dental expertise for the treatment of diseases, injuries, tumors and deformities of the mouth, jaws and face. The specialty forms the natural bridge between the clinical disciplines of dentistry and medicine. The department serves a vital role in various interdepartmental collaborations, including Head and Neck Cancer reconstruction, with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), the multidisciplinary cleft palate team and Oral Pathology service.

Maxillofacial and oral surgeons manage a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions with particular emphasis on dental implants, jaw reconstruction, treatment of infections, facial trauma, oral pathology, orthognathic surgery, management of salivary gland diseases, management of temporomandibular joint disorders including open and arthroscopic surgery and non-invasive facial cosmetic procedures. We believing that detailed surgical repetition leads to surgical excellence, we are dedicated to excellence in patient care.

Formal didactic courses outside of the medical school curriculum include Applied Head and Neck Surgical Anatomy, Advanced Oral Pathology, TMJ Diseases, Orthognathic Surgery. Conferences consist of clinical pathology, preoperative surgery, journal club and oral and maxillofacial teaching seminars.

Research focus includes modalities for the management of craniofacial trauma and non-invasive facial cosmetic procedures for management of rare facial infections.

Maxillofacial Pathology

MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY

The Department consists of four distinct sections: Oral Biology, Oral Pathology, Oral Microbiology and Forensic Odontology.

The laboratory of Oral Pathology is the referral center for the diagnosis of diseases of the head and neck region affecting the rural- and peri-urban communities of South Africa. The laboratory is equipped to perform state-of-the-art histological examinations including immuno-histochemistry, immuno-fluorescence and in-situ hybridization. Experience gained in bone labelling and dynamic histomorphometry resulted in Oral Pathology becoming the center of choice in South Africa for the diagnosis of metabolic diseases affecting mineralized tissues.

Research programs focus on diseases affecting the rural communities of Southern Africa and particularly the debilitating skeletal conditions of the children in the region.

Oral Microbiology is responsible for integrating medical microbiology with the microbiology of the oral cavity. The teaching program for undergraduate students provides knowledge on the diagnosis and management of infectious disease before commencement of clinical training. Of particular importance is the teaching of the fundamentals of microbiological induced tooth- and periodontal diseases. Post graduate programs are individually tailored and focus on the needs of the respective disciplines in Dentistry. The Oral Microbiologists play a pivotal role in clinical infection control in the hospital. Research towards post graduate qualifications focuses on aspects of infection control in the setting of a Dental hospital.

Forensic Odontology provides a forensic service to the police and district surgeons practicing in the northern sector of South Africa. This service entails the analyses of bite marks, person identification and investigation into cases of dental malpractice and fraud.

Maxillofacial Oral Radiology

MAXILLOFACIAL ORAL RADIOLOGY

Maxillofacial and Oral Radiology render academic as well as diagnostic radiological service to the Medunsa Campus Oral Health Centre at the School of Oral Health Sciences. The academic service provides a basic and practical account of the essential subject matter of both, dental radiography and dental radiology to undergraduate Oral Hygiene, Dental Therapy and dental students as well as to postgraduate dental students.

Emphasis is placed on the selection of an appropriate radiological technique for each patient whilst applying the principles of ALARA.  All images are interpreted by a Dental Radiologist and appropriate cases are used to train students on the establishment of a differential diagnosis.

Our research thrust is focused on the radiological interpretation and three-dimensional imaging of pathology endemic in our rural and peri-urban African population sample.

ORTHODONTICS

ORTHODONTICS

The Orthodontics department strives to deliver quality orthodontic care by determining the orthodontic needs of all South African citizens and developing treatment and service modalities to satisfy these needs in an affordable, efficient and accessible manner. This includes the running of a large multidisciplinary Cleft Clinic with patient population mainly from the socially disadvantaged communities across Southern Africa.

In pursuit of this goal, we strive to improve the orthodontic awareness of our community by:

Assisting in the teaching and training of oral hygienists/dental therapist/dentist
Enhancing knowledge to general Dentists through Diploma and masters post-graduate courses
Training of orthodontic specialists
Rendering a consultancy service to the medical and dental profession
Being an authority on the diagnosis and treatment of dentofacial abnormalities in the South African community
Encouraging and promoting research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Research focus includes studying, analyzing and finding solutions to malocclusion of South African ethnic origin and comparing findings and treatment solutions to those found and used internationally.
