The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University is a Health Sciences institution focused on improving the quality of life in the communities of South Africa and the globe. Our Teaching, learning, community engagement and research focuses on pursuing innovative solutions to the world’s great challenges about health. SMU is the only health sciences university is the Southern Africa.

Our performance as a University in Africa and on the world stage continues to improve as we move closer to realising our goals of being global leaders in health sciences, in each of our spheres of teaching, learning and research.

SMU establishes the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator
The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) established its Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CfERI), under the School of Science and Technology. The objectives of CfERI encompasses activating, protecting and nurturing the pragmatic entrepreneurial ideas to invigorate the socio-economic standing of the SMU and its surrounding communities.

School of Oral Health Sciences received funding from the Gauteng Department of Health
 Prof Stephen Hendricks received  of funding from the Gauteng department of health which enabled the school of oral health sciences to procure vital equipment.

Prof Ayo-Yusuf appointed by Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) and Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAF)

SMU is pleased to announce that Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf has recently been appointed by the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) to serve as a member of its Scientific and Research Technical Task Team. The task team focuses on ensuring that healthcare services are compliant with relevant regulations and standards so that patients in both the public and private sectors are protected.

Prof Ayo-Yusuf has also been elected the Deputy Chair of the Health standing committee of the prestigious Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAF).

Prof Ayo-Yusuf is the DVC responsible for Research, Postgraduate Studies and Innovation at SMU.

SMU receives R600 000 funding from CHIETA

SMU recently received funds to the tune of R600 000 from The Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority (CHIETA) to fund 10 needy students in the school of Pharmacy.

Prof Demana appointed Vice President of SAAPI

Professor Patrick Demana appointed as the Vice President of the South African Association for Pharmacists in Industry in 2021.

SAAPI is an association of pharmacists and other professionals who practice in the pharmaceutical industry.

The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University hosted a successful 50th International Association of Dental Research Conference

The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University hosted the 50th International Association of Dental Research Conference (IADR) from 12 -13 November 2020 at the Fire and Ice Protea Hotel, near Menlyn, in Pretoria.

IADR is a professional body of oral health practitioners with over 10 000 members worldwide. The IADR’s mission is to drive dental, oral, and craniofacial research to advance health and well-being worldwide.  Its vision is to provide access to oral health services for the world through discovery and dissemination.

A number of prominent speakers attended and addressed the conference including Deputy Minister of Higher Education Science and Innovation Mr Buti Manamela, Vice Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, Professor Ayo-Yusuf and others.

The SMU Retirement Fund was established in 2017

Service Level Agreement with North West province in 2017

In 2017, a Service Level Agreement was concluded with North West province involving the Swartruggens Regional Training Centre. The partnership with the North West department of health sought to establish a Rural Clinical School and the training of health care professionals in the Bojanala District.

A memorandum of Agreement was signed with the Gauteng department of health in 2017 for development of academic health compliance and training professionals

The successful installation of the first Chancellor of SMU Dr Edna Molewa in March 2017,

SMU/ DGMAH partnership with the Haukeland University hospital in Norway in 2016

SMU/ DGMAH partnered in 2016 with the Haukeland University hospital in Norway on 2 programmes namely:

  • The training of super numeracy Registrars in paediatrics and nurses in midwifery in a tripartite partnership between Norway, South Africa and Zanzibar
  • The other one focused on capacity and competence in traumatology and emergency medicine in a tripartite partnership with Norway, South Africa and Malawi.
