Registration 2024 notice for RETURNING students

Final Selection, Admission and Registration of First Time Entering Students

FINAL SELECTION, ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION OF FIRST TIME ENTERING STUDENTS

1. APPLICATIONS

The closing date for applications was 31 July 2023. The University received more than 92 000 online applications. There were more than 52 000 first choices and 39000 second choices for undergraduate applications. The University has places for about 1000 first time entering students. As a result, the University does not accept late applications and walk-ins because of the high number of on-time applications.

2. FINAL SELECTIONS (FIRST TIME ENTERING STUDENTS)

  • The University will apply for embargoed Grade 12 results through USAf to the Department of Basic Education. These results will be released to universities a few days before they are made available to high schools and learners. The early release of results will give SMU the opportunity to compete favourably with other institutions for outstanding performers.
  • The University will announce the outcome of the final selections after the release of Grade 12 results in January 2024
  • Successful applicants will be given three (3) days to accept and register or decline the offer online. If they do not respond with the given time, their places will be given to applicants on the waiting list.
  • Applications of internal and external transfers (those who are currently studying at universities) will be considered in January 2024.
  • Applicants are also able to check the status of their applications on the SMU website (self-help platform portal). Link: https://lifestudent.smu.ac.za/pls/prodi41/w99pkg.mi_login (using student number and pin).

3. APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCE

There are limited places in University residence and admission to study at SMU does not guarantee a place in (on campus and university-arranged off campus) residence. The places are awarded on a first come first served basis and the University is not obliged to provide a place in the residence.

4. REGISTRATION PREPARATIONS

  • Registration of all students (first years and returning students) will be online and students will be able to register on and off campus.
  • Services such as lifting of academic and/or financial blocks, as well as confirmation of correct choice of modules, will be provided by staff from the Registrar’s Office, Finance Department and the Schools.
  • Applicants may also call the University enquiry centre to enquire about the status of their applications or the registration process.
  • Applicants are however encouraged to monitor the University portal for changes in their statuses. Link: https://lifestudent.smu.ac.za/pls/prodi41/w99pkg.mi_login (using student number and pin).

5. ACADEMIC STRUCTURE FOR THE 2024 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • The testing of the academic structure for completeness will be done before the end of the year.

6. FINANCIAL RELATED MATTERS

The Finance Department will take decisions before registration about the following:
