General Questions

1. When will the final selections and admissions take place?

In January 2025 after the release of Grade 12 examination results.

2. When will I be informed about the outcome of my application if I am doing Grade 12 in 2024?

After the University has considered the 2024 Grade 12 examination results that would be released by the Department of Basic Education in January 2025.

3. When will I be informed about the outcome of my application if I have already passed Grade 12?

After the School Selection Committee meeting in September/October 2024

4. When will I be informed about the outcome of my application if I was studying at another institution of higher learning in 2024?

After the School Selection Committee meeting in January 2025, and on receipt of your academic record from your previous institution

5. How will I be informed about the outcome of my application?
  1. Through sms and email after selections have been made.
  2. You can also check the status of your application on the website (using self-help portal) on https://lifestudent.smu.ac.za/pls/prodi41/w99pkg.mi_login
6. How much time is given for an applicant to accept or decline a study offer?

A study offer should be accepted/declined within three (3) days upon receipt of such an offer. Failure to accept an offer within three (3) days will result in the offer being withdrawn and given to another applicant, because there are limited places available at SMU. 

7. Where can I get more information about the registration process?
  1. Successful applicants will be given more information about registration and fees after they have accepted their study offers.
  2. Such information will also be made available on the University website: Registration Guidelines and Notices | SMU
  3. Accepted students should register within three (3) days after an offer has been accepted. Failure to register within three (3) days will result in the offer being withdrawn and given to another applicant because there are limited places available for all academic programmes at SMU.
8. How do I register?
  1. Registration will be online and students can register on campus or off campus anytime during the day or night: Self Help iEnabler
  2. Students can use University facilities on campus or their own gadgets (laptops or smart cellular phones) to register.
9. How can I communicate with the University?
  1. Enquiries related to selection/admission should be emailed to: apply@smu.ac.za
  2. Applicants should write their names in full and use their student number in their correspondence with the University.
  3. Telephonic enquiries related to selection/admission/registration should be directed to the following numbers: 012 521 4204/ 4319/4644/5057
10. Can a study/admission offer be withdrawn?

Yes, the offer can be withdrawn if the information provided by the applicant is found to be untruthful after an admission offer has been made. The admission offer will be revoked immediately and no further correspondence will be entered into with the applicant.

11. Does admission to SMU automatically qualify me for University residence?

Admission to study at SMU does not guarantee a place in the University residence. If you indicated in your application that you’d require a place in the University residence, the Residence Department will communicate with you after you have accepted the study offer given to you.

12. How will I know about University processes?

All registered first time entering students are required to attend orientation programmes where they will be informed of the University, its structures and important services available to students and other related matters. The dates will also be made available on the University website

13. Please Note
  1. The University received more applications than the number of available spaces.
  2. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the University programmes.
  3. Late applications and/or walk-ins will NOT be allowed as the University has already received large volumes of applications for each of the programmes on offer.
