The National Health Act 61 of 2003 requires that all health research in South Africa must be reviewed and approved by an ethics committee that is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) . Our ethics review and processes are guided by the National Department of Health ‘Ethics in Health Research: Principles, Processes and Structures (2015), 2nd Edition’
Health research
‘Health research’ means any research that contributes to knowledge of –
a) biological, clinical, psychological or social processes in human beings;
b) provision of health services;
c) human pathology;
d) causes of disease;
e) effects of the environment on the human body;
f) development and evaluation of health-related interventions, which include medicines (allopathic, homeopathic, naturopathic, traditional, etc.) and related substances; vaccines; surgical procedures; appliances and technology; behavioural, nutritional and other interventions; and health systems management and policy interventions.
