Integrated Clinical Dentistry
INTEGRATED CLINICAL DENTISTRY | |
The Department provides academic teaching and training of undergraduate learners in practicing their profession with integrity, professionalism and accountability, and building a relationship of mutual trust between patients and health care practitioners. Integrated Clinical Dentistry is the exit level year of study, were the learners must synthesize their learning from the previous four years of study in dentistry and develop the skill to assess their own learning through self-reflection. The modules at this level are: Comprehensive Care Clinic, Problem-based Learning, Electives and Service Learning. The learner must pass all the modules to graduate as a dentist. The School prides itself as being the only dental school in South Africa offering this model of training of the final year students, which allows them a full year of general practice in preparation for a professional life as a dentist. The Department’s research focus is on dental education, curriculum planning and practice management. | |

Prosthodontics
PROSTHODONTICS | |
The Department of Prosthodontics trains undergraduate students in pre-clinical and clinical prosthodontics. This includes teaching the techniques and clinical supervision of both removable and fixed prosthodontics (i.e. complete, partial and immediate dentures, over dentures, single dentures, duplication of dentures and posts, cores, veneers, crowns and bridges respectively). The department also trains postgraduate students in prosthodontics, which includes implantology, temporomandibular disturbances, endodontics and maxillofacial prosthodontics. The department strives to excel in the three core functions viz. service, research and teaching and training of undergraduate and post graduate programs. The department also engages the Bachelor of Oral Hygiene and Dental Therapy programs with respect to their expanded function training. In addition the department provides much needed oral rehabilitation service to the public and is engaged in meaningful research to enhance teaching and training of oral health care providers. Areas of research include evaluating quality of prosthetic services (including impact of patients’ quality of life); impression materials dimensional stability; comparing craniofacial profile across ethnic populations in South Africa; and dental education research as it relates to prosthodontic curriculum content and delivery. | |
