Programmes

Human Nutrition & Dietetics Department offers various programmes to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Programmes ranges from:

Undergraduate Programmes:

BSc Dietetics

The Dietetics degree programme extends over a minimum period of four years, followed by the twelve months’ compulsory community service. All students admitted to the first year of study must register as a student with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. It is only after completion of the compulsory community service that graduates are legally entitled to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) (Act 89 of 1997) as independent registered dietitian.

 

The undergraduate programme focuses on training in the following main areas:

  • Food Service Administration
  • Community Nutrition
  • Therapeutic Nutrition.

Postgraduate Programmes:

MSc Dietetics


Admission requirements
Applicants must be in possession of a four-year qualification or an honours degree in nutrition/dietetics, or have received status from Senate according to the rules and regulations regarding such Admission.
 
Duration
The minimum duration of the degree programme is 2 years and the maximum 4 years.
 

Curriculum
 
The candidate shall execute research under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by Senate. The research topic may be in one, or a combination of the following fields:

  • Nutritional Physiology and/or Biochemistry
  • Community Nutrition
  • Therapeutic Nutrition
  • Foodservice Administration

The candidate shall submit a dissertation on completion of his/her studies.

 

PhD Dietetics

Applicants must be in possession of a MSc (Diet) degree or have received status from Senate according to the rules and regulations regarding such Admission.
