ABOUT CLINICAL PHARMACY DIVISION

Clinical pharmacy, which includes pharmaceutical care or the direct supervision of a patient’s pharmacotherapeutic needs, is a rapidly developing field for practicing pharmacists in South Africa. Training of clinical pharmacists in South Africa includes a system based modular approach Master’s degree, with the focus on clinical pharmacy. The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (the then Medunsa) offers the Master’s degree since 1996. Since then the Division of Clinical Pharmacy has consistently delivered graduates with clinical pharmacy expertise that has been appointed in key positions in South Africa.

The Division of Clinical Pharmacy is also involved in the training of undergraduate students.
The core research fields include: antimicrobial stewardship, clinical pharmacy education, intensive care and paediatric clinical pharmacy, ototoxicity, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
