Biology and Environmental Sciences Academic Programmes

Academic Offerings

The Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences offers Biology as a qualifying course for a three or four year degree of Bachelor of Science. The four-year BSc starts with an Extended degree programme (ECP) for students who do not comply with the admission requirements for the first level in the three-year degree qualification. The current ECP in Biology stenches the first year curriculum of Biology I over two years.

The admission requirements for the first level of the three-year BSc is NQF4 and at least a symbol of 5 in Mathematics and 4 in Physical Sciences, Biology, English and one additional subject. The admission requirements for the Extended degree programme is a symbol of 4 in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Biology, English and one additional subject.

Possible subjects that can be combined with Biology in the Life Sciences stream are Biochemistry, Chemistry and Physiology.

This course focuses on Environmental Biology, Palaeontology and Philosophy of Biological Science, Fish Parasitology, Tick Biology and the completion of a research project. Admission requirements are: BSc with 60% for Biology/Zoology III or any relevant subject at third year level and/or a personal interview.

Masters and Doctorate degree

Masters and Doctorate degree in Biology can only be achieved through the submission of a dissertation/thesis. Research in the department focuses mainly around Conservation Biology, Acarology and Ethnobotany, Fish Parasitology and Palaeontology.
