Biology Academic Programmes

Academic Offerings

The Department of Biology offers Biology as a qualifying course for a three or four year degree of Bachelor of Science. The four-year BSc starts with an Extended degree programme (ECP) for students who do not comply with the admission requirements for the first level in the three-year degree qualification. The current ECP in Biology stenches the first year curriculum of Biology I over two years.

The admission requirements for the first level of the three-year BSc is NQF4 and at least a symbol of 5 in Mathematics and 4 in Physical Sciences, Biology, English and one additional subject. The admission requirements for the Extended degree programme is a symbol of 4 in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Biology, English and one additional subject.

Possible subjects that can be combined with Biology in the Life Sciences stream are Biochemistry, Chemistry and Physiology.

BSc Honours in Biology

A BSc Honours in Biology is also presented. This course focuses on Environmental Biology, Palaeontology and Philosophy of Biological Science, Fish Parasitology, Tick Biology and the completion of a research project. Admission requirements are: BSc with 60% for Biology/Zoology III or any relevant subject at third year level and/or a personal interview.

Masters and Doctorate degree in Biology can only be achieved through the submission of a dissertation/thesis. Research in the department focuses mainly around Conservation Biology, Acarology and Ethnobotany, Fish Parasitology and Palaeontology.
