Department of Statistical Science
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The department offers contact education to undergraduate students using blended methods such as study guides, formal lectures, tutorials, hand-outs/letters, prescribed books, class tests, and assignments to the students. Tutorials are provided for undergraduate students, and are more emphatic at first- and second-years of the modules. Statistics is a major for the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in the stream of Mathematical Sciences. The department also offers BSc Honours, MSc and PhD degrees in Statistics. Members in the department are fully engaged in research as individuals and groups. Focus of most researches covers modelling and applications to appreciate theory development and application of theory.
This department has a dedicated team of mostly young, but very energetic academics. Our modules provide an adequate background of basic statistical concepts and techniques. It also offers our students the opportunity to assist campus researchers in various services requiring statistics. The student support of our undergraduates is effusively effective. The lecturers exploit it meaningfully in the facilitation of learning.
The department develops statisticians
Our growth is towards a full curriculum in Operations Research (OR) and Biostatistics. Through Statistics and OR, we will provide quantitative and decision-making skills to students in other disciplines. Biostatistics will favour researchers on campus, particularly from the health sciences. It is also a niche which will attract students from all over Africa and other parts of the world. The programmes will provide a logical degree structure which brings statistical knowledge and technology skills to students. Research within the department is in mathematical statistics with the aim to maintain a balance between the development of theory and applications of that theory.
