ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department is the youngest in the school, established some years ago with a staff complement of three which has increased to the current number of eight. The department now has young dynamic professionals with intensive IT experience on different environments. It offers modules in Computer Science & Information Technology leading to a 3-year BSc degree, a 1-year honours programme in its early infancy dating back to 2019, and a Master degree programme to start soon hopefully, in 2021 as we await the final accreditation processes. A PhD programme application with DHET will follow suite after the accreditation of MSc and is expected to start in 2022.

In recent years the department has seen tremendous growth in student numbers to be at par with other departments in the same cluster (Mathematical & Computational Sciences, inherited from University of Limpopo as a result of the major). Department offers competitive courses which to a larger extent mirror what the industry needs which has resulted in higher employment rate of our undergraduate and post graduate students. In 2019 when the honours programme started with 20 students, by the end of the first quarter, 15 of the enrolled students were absorbed into industry with the remaining five able to work within the University either as Help Desk support staff with ICT department or as tutors in our department as well as in English Proficiency department.

OUR VISION

Transforming teaching and learning through emerging technology, innovations and excellence.

OUR MISSION

Computer Science department is dedicated in providing quality training and education in a range of computer science and information technology areas through excellence in teaching, learning, innovative research and community engagement.

Graduate Attributes

The department has since established links with keen industry players. We are an academy for CISCO, HUAWEI, ORACLE, and IBM South Africa. In addition, we make use of software products widely used in the job market, the likes of ORACLE and Microsoft Suite. This has enabled us to incorporate industry specific modules into our academic offering necessitating a student to have certification from the respective companies upon completion at SMU, hence giving the student competitive edge over peers from other Universities in the country as well as abroad when seeking employment. We strive to continue with such relationships because of the employment benefits it brings to our graduates in building our community and nation.

In response to the call by the national government to produce more ICT graduates, the department is embarking on introducing a standalone programme in Computer Science & Information Technology at the undergraduate level to feed into the post graduate programmes. That work has already begun with the new PQM application expected to serve before all University structures and further submission to DHET early this year 2021. This certainly will see further tremendous growth in the department as well as student enrolment.

Community  Engagement

On the community engagement front, the department has one of its staff member playing a pivotal role in the entrepreneurship programme which has seen the unit attracting funding for a brand new centre for the benefit of the whole University student body. As a department we support the school’s community engagement theme which seeks to spread the wings of science & technology to our communities through computer literacy training in the 4IR era.
